The number of patent applications for maritime innovation has skyrocketed in the last decade according to new research by Thetius, a UK-based start-up and funding consultancy.
It is debatable whether the number of patent applications is a metric of innovation or of barriers to innovation, but it is certainly an important metric for the interest in the industry.
